China’s impact on the Australian private equity industry will be a major focus of the 2017 AVCJ Private Equity & Venture Forum in Sydney from 1-3 March.

Although the Chinese government has taken steps to slow outbound investment in all markets over the last few months, this is seen as a temporary measure. Chinese interest in Australian assets is a long-term theme, and it has already contributed to more competitive sale processes.

“There are many angles to the China story, not just asset prices. It presents a particular set of challenges – for private equity firms that want to take businesses into China or sell them to Chinese buyers, and for management teams that must adapt to a new commercial environment or a different kind of owner,” said Tim Burroughs, managing editor of Asian Venture Capital Journal.

“On a broader level, it also remains to be seen what the Trump presidency means for Sino-US relations, and how that might impact the private equity investors, in Australia and elsewhere in the region.”

Other issues to be covered at the Forum include:

  • Where are the entrepreneurs and ideas that will help establish Australia as a globally competitive start-up ecosystem?
  • How will the new crop of local private equity fund managers raise capital?
  • What is the 12-month outlook for the industry, given the backdrop of global uncertainty?

There will also be sessions covering institutional investors’ attitudes towards alternatives, as well as a dedicated family office panel; opportunities in private debt and distressed assets; and private equity strategies that are proving effective in other Asia-Pacific markets.

This is the 14th consecutive year that the AVCJ Private Equity & Venture Forum is being held in Sydney, and once again there is an impressive list of speakers.

They include: Steve Byrom, head of private equity at Future Fund; Adrian Kerley, investment manager for private capital at Commonwealth Superannuation Corp; Bill Ferris, executive chairman at CHAMP Private Equity; Daniel Petre, founder of AirTree Ventures; Alicia Gregory, head of private equity at MLC; Michael W. Arpey, managing director at The Carlyle Group; and Fiona Mackenzie, head of external investments and partnerships at New Zealand Superannuation Fund.

A host of other major superannuation funds are also attending, among them Telstra Super, First State Super, AustSafe, QIC, HESTA, and Sunsuper.

Overseas funds are represented via Singapore’s Temasek Holdings, China Investment Corporation, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and Malaysia’s BIMB Investment.
